Who doesn’t know chef Prasad Chirnomula! The ruler of Thai and Oaxaca Kitchen group of restaurants in Connecticut. The creator of a wide array of sauces from Moilee to Molé. The “Exciting Chef” and receiver of “Excellent” rating by New York Times. Prasad’s talents abound.
Chef Prasad’s food has always wowed me. Each time I have eaten at one of his restaurants or taken a cooking class with him, I have felt inspired by the creative and unexpected ways he presents familiar flavors. Now at INDIA, his latest venture in New Canaan, Prasad brings all his talent as well as his years of experience…. jam-packed with new ideas and flavor profiles…. with a healthy dose of surprising twists of course. After all – it wouldn’t be Prasad’s menu without those twists. You can’t help but sit at the edge of your seat as the food starts to arrive at your table. Each dish looks deceptively familiar – yet many surprises hide within.
Add to that mix Prasad’s warm, easy-going and friendly personality. By our second meeting – we were already good friends. Now I am at a stage where I am becoming friends with his good friends! Ha! Ha!
INDIA menu is fun, super-creative and delicious. It all begins with the complimentary bread and butter course which is actually naan bread with this delicious mint and cilantro butter… and get this …. tamarind hummus! Yum. We had to ask for seconds because it was so addictive. And this was just the beginning!!!
Dish after dish packed a solid flavor punch and was prepared perfectly. I was so happy to see Prasad’s Lamb Chops on the menu. You gotta try this folks. if you haven’t already at his Thali restaurants! The lamb meant is so very tender and the spices from the marinade merge from deep within the meat. Ahhhhmazing! Oh! and, the Jumbo Lump Crab Meat is offered on this menu -as well another favorite of mine!
But the piéce de résistance for me is always his Hydrabadi Biryani. Always perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. After ordering and thoroughly enjoying one order of Goat Biryani, we ended up ordering one to go. Yeah! that good!
Menu at INDIA is a medley of flavors and cultures – all with an un-mistakable undertone of Indian cuisine. Like the Barbecue Pulled Pork Taco which is served with whole wheat roti (Indian homestyle bread). Or the Fish & Chips served with Prasad’s wonderful Chilli Tomato Chutney. Or the Falafel on a Parsley Naan. You get the idea, right?
For those of you who were sadly missing Prasad’s recently closed Thali restaurant in New Canaan – not to worry…. India is right across the street from that old location. And for those of you who crave his traditional Indian curry dishes – not to worry… they made it to the INDIA menu under “Classic Fare” section.
The decor at INDIA is reminiscent of ad English Pub and the menu is primarily comprised of small plates that go really well with its extensive Beer, Wine and Single Malt Scotch menu. There are also some fun cocktails to be enjoyed…. I loved the East/West Old Fashioned.
Run, don’t walk to INDIA. Try lots of dishes to get the whole picture…… and then tell me what you think.
