The weather is warming up and I am looking forward to summer! To me, summer is all about warm sun, cool beaches, chilled drinks, BBQ meats and seafood…. LOTS of seafood! Ah! Is there anything better than a hot buttered lobster roll? For many summers past, I have chased after food trucks selling lobster rolls, visited crowd-favorites like Abbott’s Lobster in Noank, Rowayton Seafood in Rowayton, Lobster Hut in Milford and Knapps Landing in Stratford. I have diligently posted pictures of the yummy lobster rolls and other seafood-treats at these places on social media or talked about them in my blog posts. But, I have failed to give one place the attention it deserves. It is old, but still gold!
So, in anticipation of upcoming summer season, I want to shed some well-deserved limelight on a local favorite for over two decades. Westfair Fish & Chips in Westport CT! You know it, right? I have had many a lobster roll in my life but this one is quite special. It is perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked! I love the uber-juicy lobster meat served on the lightest and airiest roll which promptly soaks up all the flavors of the hot butter and those juices from the lobster meat. There is a LOT of lobster meat on this roll. Frankly, its more than what that roll can hold (in fact you barely see the roll under all that lobster meat). I have to admit that it is a messy thing to eat with your hands. But oh! so worth it!
There are many other items on the Westfair Fish & Chips menu. Lots of fried and broiled seafood options… something for everyone! The seafood bisque is rich and delicious, although a tad bit salty for my taste. I know many friends who swear by their fish and chips. And why not? The pieces of fish are large, meaty and tender. The fried batter is well-seasoned and the tartar sauce served on the side is a lovely flavor complement. I also enjoy their lightly sweet an crunchy coleslaw. I could eat tons of that stuff, so help me God!
Westfair Fish & Chips is tiny little place, but there are a few tables inside as well as outside. A big part of this business is take-out. Although, I found that by the time I brought my order of fish & chips home, it had lost its delightful crispiness. And while I cannot resist eating it immediately, I bet if I were to bring it home, the lobster roll will practically disintegrate within minutes from all the butter and juices. So just eat it there folks!
Time for a confession…. in the last few weeks, I have already visited Westfair Fish & Chips three times. And the summer hasn’t even begun!. Oh, dear! This foodie is in serious trouble! 😉
