The old world charm of authentic greek cuisine, generous portions, a family that welcomes you with open arms and a smiling elderly man who sits at his favorite window seat to wave at all the passers by.
There! Does that have your curiosity all perked up? Think that I may be talking of some bygone era? Assuming that I am describing a must-try foodie destination in some quaint Greek town? Hmm….. Could such a place exist in USA, let alone Fairfield county?
Famous Greek Kitchen (FGK) in Greenwich/Byram is all that and more. For over 35 years this cozy little restaurants has been a secret well kept by neighbors, close friends and family. Regulars have come by week after week, month after month, year after year because its just one of those places where “everybody knows your name”. Plus the consistently good food and happy faces that greet you are so irresistible that one can’t help but feel compelled to go back for more.
When John Karipides and his wife first opened this restaurant over three decades ago – it was almost like their way of welcoming the community into their own home. They poured all their love and culinary skills into the food and service. With fair prices and generous portions – their goal was to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.
Now, John has reluctantly retired from the job he loved as his three children take over the reigns and work hard to continue the family tradition of good food and great service. With an updated and modern interior as well as food presentation – the children have a clear goal in mind: to never compromise on quality and flavors. John’s two daughters, Maria and Sophia, run the front of the house while his son, Steve – a CIA graduate, mans the kitchen. And John? Why he sits at his favorite seat by the window to smile and wave at everyone who passes by.
I had my first taste of FGK a couple of weeks ago and found myself right back there just 3 days later. I LOVED what I had the first time, and I wanted to try more! This time I took my honey with me. John Karipides recognized me immediately. He was sitting at his favorite seat by the window – as always. As soon as he saw us, he offered his seat – because he knew it was special…. and it made us feel special. We really enjoyed our meal and a lovely conversation with Maria who came to chat with us for a while. She has promised that her dad will join us the next time we dine at FGK – at that very special seat by the window. Hey! I have a tweet to prove it!
Some must-haves at FGK are the super light and airy hummus (OMG – I will never like another other hummus after this one), lamb chops, Oktapodi, Famous Greek Platter, Five Shades Of Green (a salad), Mousaka…. Yum! Yum! Yummmm!!!!
