I was recently approached by a lady named Beth who was wondering if I would be interested in spreading the word about a fundraiser, to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, coming up in Stamford. I have to admit, I approached it like I do with other such emails. I acknowledged that it is a great cause, and I obviously wanted to help out – so I quickly scanned the date of the event and the highlights and made a note to myself to get back to it when the time is right.
Well today was the day that I had scheduled to post something about it on my blog, so I hunted down the emails from Beth and reviewed all the materials. Beth was also kind enough to send me some pictures of the event, as per my request.
As I looked through the pictures she sent, I came across a compelling photo of a little boy, looking straight at the camera. I wondered how that photo ties into what I am supposed to write about. I am shaking as I write this, because I just realized that the picture is that of Beth’s little boy Charlie, who has been battling Cystic Fibrosis since he was born. Charlie is 5 yrs old now and this photo was taken on his first day at school. This brave little boy has accepted his daily management of this disease as “part of life”.
CF, due to a genetic mutation of cells, makes it hard for cells in the body to take out trash, namely-chloride. If allowed to build up in the body it can develop bacteria and can have serious repercussions. This “trash” literally has to be pumped out by beating on the chest or now, in Charlie’s case, by wearing a vibrating vest twice a day.
I cannot imagine how challenging and nerve racking it must have been for the parents to do this daily pumping procedure on a newborn. Charlie’s family and many others like them are hoping for a solution that may come in the form of a simple pill. This event will help raise the money for the research.
