Prepared With Love, At The Corner

Man, I love my boss lady! I love her for many reasons…. she is kind, thoughtful, considerate and an adorable workaholic! But mostly I love her because she understands my foodie obsessions… which is what led her to introduce me to this super delicious and ultra authentic food at La Esquina Latin Grill! One day when out of the blue, she proposed to me that we step out the office and try this new restaurant which opened up just around the corner…. I could not resist!

La Esquina opened it’s doors just a week ago. It is a family owned business from the same folks that own Flamboyant Chico Cocina in Stamford. Members of this family are from different parts of Latin America. So if you like Latin cuisine - you will find a nice variety of favorites on the menu. Like Lomo Saltado…. yum! Last time I had Lomo Saltado was in Peru many many years ago. It was nice to get a delicious bite of this dish once again. I actually loved this version much better because what I ate in Peru was a bit too salty for my taste (Yes! I know. It is supposed to be salty…. that’s where the word saltado comes in).

The guacamole and chips are perfect. Just perfect! Served with a fresh salsa offering a spicy kick - this flavor and texture combo was irresistible!

I tried the quesadilla on my first visit here…. I think I will keep recommending this dish to everyone from now on… it is such a perfect lunchtime option!

Los 3 hermanos is a nice helping of three tacos: chicken, steak or portobello mushroom. Naturally I ordered one of each. All three flavors are worth it. I love the wonderful texture and mouthfeel of the tortillas. Fresh… and homemade. Can’t beat that!

The rice and beans served as side with many dishes - are delicious but the not the best I have had.

The sauce that came with the empanadas was so mysteriously delicious that I felt compelled to ask Robert, the owner, about it. He refused to tell me the whole secret … but I did hear a quick mention of jalapeno and lettuce among other things! Seriously!

I love the very basic and simple vibe of this place. It’s clean, comfortable and welcoming. The owners and staff are passionate and eager to please. They want to make sure that you enjoy your meal. If you like spicy food - Robert will be more than happy to comply with chunks of green chilis in your food. Just ask! :-)

Since it’s such a new business, one has to allow for time the staff needs to work out the kinks in service etc. So if you go anytime soon - be patient. This place is not for an upscale dining experience. It’s meant for some damned good, soulful and authentic food - prepared with love! I am so grateful that it is just round the corner from my office! Delicious lunchtime fun! Perhaps everyday!!!
