The bright yellow Mexican food truck in Norwalk at the intersection of North Ave and Main St always seems to be there. Always surrounded by tons of parked cars and groups of people (mostly hispanic) eagerly waiting for their order to be ready. Some are there on a lunch break with their co-workers and some are there with their wives and kids.
What does that tell me? That the food must be authentic. And one day when I finally pulled up my car to try a few dishes from El Azteca food truck… well! It looked authentic too. But when it comes to food, I can’t always believe what my brain and my eyes tell me. The most important test is that of taste. And so I tasted.
Tacos are super-delish.! Very nice soft and fresh tortillas that can be topped with a pretty nice variety of toppings from the menu. You must be thinking chicken, pork, beef. Yes? Ah! now also think tongue and head! Wha?!!! These small tacos, priced at $2, will give you about 4 bites each. But for me, 3 tacos made for a pretty satisfying lunch. All the toppings tasted fresh and freshly made. I loved the two sauces that come with it. The green one is mild and cilantro based while the red one has some peppers and tomatoes … spicier.
There was more on the menu that intrigued me…. so a couple of days later, I went back. Mmm.. hmmm! This time I tried the Tex-Mex Hamburguesa which I found so intriguing that I could not resist. It was such an in-your-face, bold-as-bold-can-be composition of ingredients and flavors. The burger was on a super light and airy Portuguese roll, topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce, onions, ketchup, avocado and …… MUSTARD! Whoa! I have never ever eaten a burger with avocado and mustard. It was a very odd flavor profile to me… but at the same time, I could totally see myself getting addicted to its uniqueness and its boldness. The jury is still out on whether I love it or not.
I also wanted to try a spicy torta. So they made me one with spicy ground pork and jalapeños. It was a pretty good sandwich. It kinda reminded me of a manwich and not so much of Mexican food. It was a bit hard to eat - as it fell apart very easily. The super soft bread was not strong enough to hold the moist ground meat filling. So be warned - ask for a ton of napkins if you decide to give this dish a try. A fork will also be nice.
Even as I write this article, I am planning my third visit to El Azteca - and this time it is going to be all about burritos. I watched many happy people eating those. And damn! they looked good.
