The Invasion Of Farmers Markets!

One of the reasons I really look forward to spring and summertime is that there are so many things to do outdoors. Sipping early morning tea on the deck, the mid morning jogs, the lazy afternoons at the sandy beaches, the outdoor dining venues, concerts and cook-outs, and of course the farmer’s markets.

I delight in the fact that I can finally skip the freezing cold grocery stores and stop by my local farmers markets instead! I shall buy my fresh produce in fresh air!

After doing some research at Fairfield Green Food Guide , I realized that there is a farmers market in practically every town around here. They are held on various days of the week – which is great in case you don’t want to buy a whole week’s worth of supplies at one time.

So far, I have visited Wilton Farmers Market, Weston Farmers Market and of course Westport Farmers Market. And I have a couple of observations.

While Wilton and Weston Farmers Markets are pretty good…neither can beat the Westport Farmers Market in its sheer size and quality. The vegetables at the Westport Farmers Market are just far superior. They look more vibrant and healthier and are offered in large varieties and quantities. It’s like there is a “Produce Police” checking each vegetable at the door to see if it is worthy of being at the market that day.

Another observation I made early on, is that these are not “just farmers markets” in the real sense of the word. Some vendors at these farmers markets sell a lot of pre-made goodies. The first time I noticed breads, cookies, cakes, tamales and soap at the market - I found it odd. Why would you need to buy such things at the farmers markets? Isn’t that what the specialty stores are for?

But then I got hooked on to the idea. I realized that it is all part of an enhanced experience. It’s a one-stop shop. But it’s a shop with only the highest-quality goods. Now, I look forward to what is in store for me at the market besides the fresh fruits and vegetables. :-)

As for prepared goods, high quality vendors like Wave Hill Breads and SONO Baking Company grace the Westport Farmers Market with their amazing goodies. Andre’s cookies from Savor Fine Foods are always to “die-for” (you must try his roasted leeks shortbread cookies). And I am simply HOOKED on Tamales from Boxcar Cantina!

At the Wilton Farmer’s Market, the newest addition is Festivities Catering! They had fabulous Zahtaar crisps, and killer savory popcorn. Nicole from With Love From the Cupboard offered delectable macaroons and delicious and moist apple bread! Yum!

I hear Darien and Rowayton Farmers Markets have won local awards. I look forward to venturing there very soon.

Which farmers market is your favorite?

    Foodie,
I am like you in my love for food and farmers markets! I have to say that Westport is my favorite local farmers market but if I am to be totally honest, the absolute best farmers market I have ever been to is in Waitsfield Vermont. You should defintily go there just one time for the experience. You will love it!!
