This newcomer made me do a double-take with its unusual flavor pairings and bold menu choices. A relatively small space overflowing with charm and character, Little Goose in Fairfield is far from the dull and the ordinary.
It was good to meet up with my bestie H.A. after weeks! We had so much catching up to do, and we totally knew that we would be talking non-stop throughout lunch. Jobs. Life. Family. Gossip … so much ground to cover!
Little did we know that the menu will become the focal point of our lunch conversation. And so, no matter how hard we tried, we kept coming back to that same topic. The unusual and surprisingly flavorful dishes took us by surprise. Like the Hot and Moody Chips - perfect as bar food or an appetizer. It was enough to get your taste buds doing a roller-coaster with the sharp and salty blue cheese, sweet and tangy balsamic drizzle and the delicately spicy scallions. It was impossible to stop eating these babies. I am still not sure if I couldn’t resist them because they were so delicious or because they were so different. Hmm… “Food” for thought!
Another really interesting dish was Arthur Avenue Spring Rolls. Meatballs rolled into wanton wraps, deep fried and served with marinara sauce. I mean, who would have thunk?!!! What a marriage of Italian and Asian cuisines.
The Chicken Empanadas, were delicious and were paired with mole sauce and lime creme. Crisp exterior and wonderfully hot and meaty interior - this is a great anytime snack.
The one dish that had me all hot an bothered with anticipation was the Prime-rib French Dip Sandwich. It was delicious, but different from what I hoped. I wanted it to be just juicy and tender meat with some sautéed onions and bell peppers - and of course the au jus to dip it in. The Au jus was divine. The meat delicious. The calabrese peppers added texture. But the one thing that I sadly did not like was the smoked gouda cheese. Somehow, the cheese on the sandwich did not work for me. The cheese did make the sandwich quite moist and added further depth of flavor, but when I have a french dip, all I really want is bread, meat and perfectly seasoned au jus. The cheese just transported it from France to USA. Not a biggie, because next time I will just request the chef to skip the cheese on mine.
Check out this newcomer for lunch or dinner, or even for a late night snack after catching that movie- and see how even a little goose can deliver big flavors!
